What’s Your Question? for Feb. 6 Is the Holy Spirit God? God is Spirit (Jn. 4:24), and the Holy Spirit is a Divine Spirit being. Peter condemned Ananias for lying to the Holy Spirit, then said "you have not lied to men but to God" (Acts 5:3,4). If Jesus is a Divine Being, so is the Holy Spirit. He promised the apostles, "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper" (Jn. 14:16). The word "another" (Gr., allos) "expresses a numerical difference and denotes another of the same sort" (W.E. Vine). The three Divine Beings were present at Jesus’ baptism (Mt. 3:16,17). We are baptized into the "name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt. 28:19). The Father sent the Son, the Son made the atonement, and the Spirit revealed the message in words we can understand (1 Cor. 2:10-13).
